Control soot spread

Unplanned air movement, HVAC operation, walking routes and cleaning can move soot into cleaner areas.

Sprinklers and hose streams can drive water through multiple rooms and levels even when the burn area is limited.

Odor is evidence, not the whole problem

Smoke odor can remain because residues or affected porous materials remain. Source removal and cleaning generally come before specialty deodorization.

After the flames are out, damage can continue moving through the building.

Smoke can travel beyond visibly burned rooms, soot and ash can settle on surfaces and contents, odors can persist in porous materials, and firefighting or sprinkler water can create a separate water-migration and drying problem. The first useful step is to separate immediate safety issues from the property-recovery questions that come next.

1. Safety and access

Do not enter an area that fire officials or other authorities have not released for re-entry. Watch for structural, electrical and air-quality hazards.

2. Map the pathways

Document the fire area, adjoining rooms, HVAC pathways, vertical chases, contents, and areas affected by sprinkler or firefighting water. Visible soot is evidence of deposition; lack of visible soot does not by itself establish that another area is unaffected.

3. Control disturbance

Ash and soot can become airborne when disturbed. Cleaning methods should match the residue, surface and exposure conditions rather than defaulting to aggressive dry sweeping.

4. Treat water as its own incident

Suppression water can migrate through ceilings, walls, insulation, flooring and lower levels. Moisture investigation and structural drying decisions should be based on actual measurements and exposed conditions.
