Carpet is an assembly

The visible carpet is only one layer. Cushion, tack strip, adhesive, seams and the subfloor can hold different amounts of water and dry at different rates.

A dry carpet face does not establish that the pad or substrate is dry.

Water condition controls cleanability

Relatively clean water may allow more preservation options when the assembly can be effectively extracted and dried. Significant contamination can make porous cushion or other layers unsuitable for retention.

Source and elapsed time should be evaluated before aggressive air movement.

Extraction changes the drying load

Removing liquid water from carpet and cushion is much more efficient than trying to evaporate it. Multiple extraction passes and access to the cushion can materially reduce dehumidification demand.

After extraction, airflow and dehumidification must address the substrate as well as the textile surface.

Subfloor verification

Wood subfloor, concrete and gypsum-based underlayments require different measurement methods. Follow the substrate condition through the drying cycle rather than ending monitoring when carpet feels dry.
