Drying Science: the five physical ideas that matter

This primer defines the core concepts. Detailed equipment, assembly and monitoring guidance lives in Structural Drying Intelligence and the Technical Authority Library.

1. Remove liquid water

Extraction reduces the amount of water that must later become vapor. It is usually more efficient to physically remove recoverable water than to evaporate it.

2. Create evaporation

When appropriate, dry moving air across an exposed wet surface can increase evaporation by disrupting the saturated boundary layer.

3. Remove the vapor

Dehumidification or controlled air exchange must remove the water vapor released from materials or the chamber simply becomes wetter.

4. Manage energy

Temperature changes vapor pressure, material behavior and equipment performance. Heat is useful only when integrated with vapor removal and material-safe limits.

5. Verify material response

The endpoint is demonstrated by repeatable material measurements and an appropriate comparison or product requirement—not equipment runtime.
