What Is a Dry Standard?

Why drying endpoints should be material-specific and comparison-based instead of relying on one universal moisture number.

Technical review: Same Day Mitigation field leadership with IICRC restoration training. Fire/smoke subjects include FSRT-certified review.
Source standard: Primary sources support source-derived facts when appropriate; SDM field interpretation and site-specific uncertainty are identified separately.

Scope of this guide: Why drying endpoints should be material-specific and comparison-based instead of relying on one universal moisture number.

A dry standard is a reference condition

The most useful reference is often an unaffected material of similar type and construction in the same building. That comparison helps account for regional and building-specific equilibrium conditions.

When no suitable reference exists, project criteria may come from manufacturer requirements, known material ranges or specialized testing.

Meters report in different ways

Wood meters may report percentage moisture content for calibrated species or scales. Many building-material meters use relative numerical scales that are not percentages.

A target has meaning only when the instrument, material and scale are identified.

Equilibrium matters

Materials exchange moisture with surrounding air. A target that is unrealistic for the building's normal environment can lead to unnecessary drying or later rebound.

Final conditions should be appropriate for the material's intended use and any new finish system.

Trend plus endpoint is stronger than endpoint alone

A series of repeatable measurements shows whether drying was progressing normally and whether the final reading is stable rather than accidental.

Use this guide with field evidence

This guide explains the decision factors specific to what is a dry standard?. A site-specific conclusion still depends on the actual assembly, source condition, access, measurements and changes observed during the project.
