Start with the floor system, not the visible boards
A hardwood floor is a layered assembly. The finish floor may be over plywood, OSB, sleepers, concrete, adhesive, underlayment or radiant components. Moisture in the layer below can continue feeding the flooring after the surface looks normal.
Identify species, thickness, width, fastening or adhesive method, finish type and the substrate before choosing a drying approach.
What moisture does to wood
Wood changes dimension as moisture content changes. Across-grain movement is much greater than along-grain movement, which is why wet boards can cup, crown, gap or distort.
Dimensional change does not by itself tell you whether the floor can be saved. The degree of deformation, duration, contamination, finish damage and subfloor condition all matter.
Drying pathways
Controlled dehumidification lowers the surrounding vapor pressure. Surface airflow can increase evaporation where the finish allows it. Specialized floor mats or panels can create focused pressure differentials through joints and the floor system.
Aggressive heat or very low humidity can create steep moisture gradients. The objective is controlled drying of the whole assembly, not simply a dry surface.
What to monitor
Track the finish flooring and the substrate separately. Use repeatable locations and compare with unaffected material of similar species and construction when available.
Trend direction matters: a floor that is steadily approaching its comparison condition is different from one that remains elevated or rebounds after equipment changes.
When preservation becomes less reasonable
Extensive delamination, loss of bond, severe permanent deformation, contaminated water exposure, damaged engineered layers or an inaccessible wet substrate can shift the decision toward selective or full removal.
Final flooring decisions should also account for manufacturer requirements and the requirements of any replacement finish or adhesive.
