Overhead hazards come first
Wet gypsum can lose strength, insulation can add load, and water can collect above ceilings. Bulging, sagging or active dripping can indicate an unstable condition.
Do not stand beneath a visibly compromised ceiling to investigate it.
Electrical pathways are common
Ceilings contain lights, fans, junctions, wiring and sometimes mechanical equipment. Water can travel along these components away from the visible drip.
Qualified electrical evaluation may be necessary before opening or drying the area.
Find the source plane
Roof intrusion, plumbing, HVAC condensate and upper-floor losses create different migration patterns. Inspect the level above or attic when safe rather than treating the ceiling stain as the source.
Source control must precede a reliable drying plan.
Dry the cavity, not just the painted face
Insulation, framing and the upper side of gypsum can remain wet. Access, selective removal or pressure drying may be required depending on assembly, contamination and material integrity.
Monitoring should include the cavity or upper assembly where possible.
