Drywall can sometimes dry in place
Gypsum board exposed to relatively clean water may remain structurally serviceable when paper facings stay intact, contamination is limited and the wall cavity can be effectively dried.
Paint, vinyl wallcovering and insulation can slow drying and change the preservation decision.
Loss of integrity is a different problem
Soft gypsum, delaminated paper, crumbling edges, severe sagging or damaged fasteners are physical failures, not merely moisture readings.
Material that cannot perform its intended function after drying should not be retained simply because it can be made dry.
Inspect the cavity
Insulation, bottom plates, metal track and the backside of gypsum can remain wet. The visible room-side surface is an incomplete indicator.
Selective openings can provide inspection and airflow while preserving more of the wall where appropriate.
Contamination can override drying potential
Porous gypsum exposed to sewage, floodwater or other significant contamination may require removal even if technically dryable.
