Insulation type matters
Fiberglass fibers themselves absorb little water, but trapped water, binders and facings can hold moisture. Cellulose can absorb significant water and lose physical form. Mineral wool drains differently. Closed-cell foam resists bulk absorption more than open-cell foam.
Do not make one removal rule for all insulation.
Cavity configuration controls access
Insulation can block airflow against wet sheathing, studs or gypsum. Facings and vapor retarders can slow drying.
Inspection access may be required to verify what is happening behind the insulation.
Contamination changes retention decisions
Porous insulation exposed to sewage or floodwater can be difficult or impossible to clean throughout its depth.
Material disposition should consider contamination as well as whether moisture can be removed.
Verify the adjacent structure
Even if insulation is replaced, wood framing, sheathing, masonry or gypsum in the cavity may still require drying and verification before closure.
