Build the first map before assumptions harden
Map affected and unaffected locations using construction features as landmarks. Record the instrument, material and scale so later readings are comparable.
The initial boundary should be treated as provisional until concealed pathways are evaluated.
Use more than one measurement mode when needed
Non-invasive scanning can quickly locate anomalies; penetrating probes can help assess depth or concealed layers. Thermal imaging can guide the search but does not directly measure moisture.
Choose instruments based on material and question rather than convenience.
Track edges and slow zones
The center of a wet area often remains obviously wet. Edge locations and slow-drying assemblies provide more useful information about migration and progress.
Unexpected elevated readings outside the original map should trigger investigation, not simply a larger drawn circle.
Close the map with evidence
Completion should show that affected materials reached an appropriate comparison or project-specific target and that no unexplained wet boundary remains.
