A building-material problem
Odor-producing compounds can be present in the air, but repeated exposure can also leave residue on walls, ceilings, cabinetry, appliances, flooring, textiles, contents and other surfaces. Porous materials can retain odor differently than glass, metal or sealed tile. Air movement can also redistribute particles and vapors beyond the room where they originated.
That is why SDM does not begin with a promise to “deodorize the air.” We begin by asking what produced the odor, how long the condition has existed, where it is strongest, what has already been cleaned and whether the odor changes when doors, closets or the HVAC system are opened or operated.
The result is a scope based on the property rather than a one-size-fits-all treatment package.

Painted gypsum board, wood, laminate, carpet, pad, upholstery, ceiling texture and unfinished surfaces each respond differently to cleaning and may retain residues to different degrees.
Fresh paint, fragrance, carpet cleaning or air treatment can change the odor temporarily. Knowing the sequence prevents SDM from repeating ineffective work and helps identify what remains.
Air-treatment equipment may reduce certain airborne contaminants, but persistent odor often reappears when contaminated surfaces or porous materials continue to release odor-producing compounds. EPA notes that filtration supplements source control and ventilation rather than replacing them, and that filters are often designed for either particles or gases rather than both.
SDM therefore evaluates equipment as one tool in a larger process. We do not automatically prescribe ozone, duct cleaning, encapsulation or demolition simply because a property has a strong odor.
Some specialty odor-control methods have exposure limitations or product-specific safety requirements. SDM follows manufacturer instructions and the condition of the property rather than treating occupied and vacant spaces as interchangeable.
How SDM approaches persistent odor
Odor complaints often involve both airborne contaminants and residue that has settled onto or been absorbed by surfaces and porous materials. EPA guidance identifies source control as the first strategy for improving indoor air quality, with ventilation and filtration serving as additional tools. SDM applies that hierarchy to odor remediation: find the likely source, reduce or remove it, clean affected materials, then decide whether supplemental treatment is still justified.
That distinction matters because a room can smell better temporarily while the material reservoir remains. A successful scope should be driven by inspection, cleaning response and reassessment—not by assuming every odor needs fogging, duct cleaning, ozone, demolition or a sealing coat.
Odor remediation may be useful after a long-term cooking condition, before a home is listed for sale, during an apartment turnover, after a smoke event, or when a persistent odor remains after normal housekeeping. The goal is the same in each setting: identify the source and affected materials, use the least-destructive effective sequence, document the work and confirm the result after the property returns to normal conditions.
